There’s been so much conversation about natural versus lab-grown diamonds, and I think it’s time we stopped treating it as a competition. What I do not like are the jewelers who have bashed lab grown and said they would never sell them and then all of a sudden they act like they like them just to make $$$.
I love natural diamonds. I love their history, their rarity, and the fact that something so beautiful was created by the earth over billions of years. No two are exactly alike, and there’s something incredibly special about that.
But I also believe lab-grown diamonds have a place in fine jewelry. They’ve made diamonds more accessible, opened up opportunities to have fun with designs, and allowed people to wear pieces they might not otherwise consider.
At Audrey Nicole Diamonds, I work with both. And I think that’s important.
What I don’t believe is that they should be presented as the same thing.
Yes, they have the same chemical composition and optical properties, with natural diamonds having a slight bit more nitrogen. But their origins, rarity, and economics are very different. Natural diamonds are a finite geological resource. Lab-grown diamonds can be manufactured in increasing quantities, which is one reason we’ve seen their prices decline so dramatically.
And that distinction matters, especially when you’re making a significant purchase.
For me, there will always be something romantic about a natural diamond. Knowing where it came from, how long it took to form, and imagining it being passed down through generations. That’s what originally made me fall in love with this business.
But I also love the idea of wearing beautiful diamond jewelry every day, whether you’re going to work, playing tennis, traveling, or going out to dinner. Lab-grown diamonds can make that possible at a much more approachable price.
I don’t think every piece of jewelry needs to be an investment or an heirloom. Some pieces are simply meant to be worn, enjoyed, and loved.
What matters most to me is that you understand what you’re buying.
I would personally choose natural diamonds for certain forever pieces, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for everyone. And a lab-grown diamond can carry just as much personal meaning to the person wearing it.
After years of designing and working with diamonds, I’ve learned that there isn’t one answer for everyone.
My philosophy has always been to create beautiful, well-made jewelry, be transparent about what goes into it, and help you choose what makes sense for your lifestyle, your budget, and what matters to you.
Natural or lab-grown, you deserve to know the difference. And you deserve to love what you’re wearing.
