Your Jewelry's Enemies--What To Avoid?

Your Jewelry's Enemies--What To Avoid?

Essential Jewelry Care: Protect, Preserve, and Shine...

Proper jewelry care starts with daily prevention and mindful handling of both stones and metals. While diamonds are extremely strong, many colored gemstones are much softer and more vulnerable to damage.

1. Be Mindful of Daily Wear
How you wear and treat your jewelry directly affects its longevity. Everyday activities can put more stress on your pieces than you may realize. Driving or resting your hands on hard surfaces—especially with gemstone rings facing inward—stones can repeatedly tap against the steering wheel or tables. Gripping tightly can also create constant friction. Over time, this pressure can cause gemstones to crack, prongs to bend, and stones to loosen. This happens far more often than people expect, simply because we don’t notice how much force we’re applying. In some cases, even a single unnoticed impact can break a stone—so always handle your jewelry with care. If you hear your stones or metals tappin on your steering wheel, a kitchen counter, or any other surface, you need to be more careful with your jewelry pieces so they stay beautiful and intact.

2. Soaps & Suds
Soaps can leave a film on metal surfaces and collect on the undersides of gemstones. Bar soap is the worst culprit, as it builds up in prongs and settings, creating a cloudy or dirty appearance and making jewelry harder to clean. Abrasive or exfoliating soaps can also scratch metals and damage colored gemstones.

3. Cosmetics, Makeup, and Creams
Cosmetics, makeup, lotions, and sunscreen are acidic in nature and can cause color changes, surface wear, scratches, staining, and excessive buildup in settings and crevices. Always apply these products before putting on your jewelry.

4. Sun, Beaches, Ocean, and Pools
Chlorine and other oxidizing agents can cause corrosion and discoloration of both gemstones and metals. Colored gemstones are especially porous and more vulnerable to surface damage and color changes. We strongly recommend removing your jewelry before swimming, particularly in pools.

5. Sports Activities & Workouts
Our jewelry is designed to be worn daily, including during most activities—especially our stretch bracelets, which have no clasps and reduce the risk of loss. However, always remove rings when gripping clubs, rackets, paddles, or lifting weights. Gold and silver are soft metals and can easily dent, scratch, or deform. Repeated impact and pressure can crack gemstones, loosen settings, or even cause stones to fall out.

6. Storage & Cleaning
Store your jewelry separately to prevent scratching. Avoid stacking or piling pieces together—keeping them organized helps protect their shine and structure. Clean your jewelry periodically using warm water, a drop of very mild soap, and a soft toothbrush or jewelry brush to gently clean around settings and crevices. Professional cleaning is recommended as needed.
Over time, gold can dull due to everyday wear and exposure, and services such as polishing or re-rhodium plating may be beneficial. It’s also important to regularly check that stones are secure in their settings, as they can loosen over time. You’re always welcome to bring or ship your jewelry to us—we’re happy to professionally clean, polish, re-rhodium, and inspect all settings for you.
